I was talking to nick about this earlier... the state of programming must in general be in pretty bad shape if people need the kind of computing power that's being bought these days for home use.

jawbreaker has two old 550 mhz katmai-core p3's running old 2.2 linux code in (only) 384 meg of memory. I'm ripping tracks with cdparanoia, encoding the previous batch with bladeenc, shuffling existing stuff with mpg123 and running a backup of /home to tape—all at the same time and on top of normal server functions and a copy of win2k running in vmware workstation. and there are still a ton of (like ½+) cpu cycles left.

*sigh* it's hard to be happy in a field that actually seems to be regressing.
