I haven't heard from the other two places from which I was really expecting to get offers by now. well, I heard from the recruiter that hooked me up with one of them... the hiring manager is in new york, he won't be back until late tonight, so that's why we haven't heard anything.
someone needs to give me a freaking job. it's made me pretty crazy several times in the last couple of weeks, worrying about things like paying the rent when the middle of june rolls around. most of the time I'm down with a little disaster in life, but I'm just about ready for this one to be over so I can move on.
oh yeah—god damn the ice cream truck. did you ever think you'd hear anyone say that? it comes by about this time every afternoon, playing an electronic rendition of what shane found out is "the sailor's hornpipe". it's mindfuckingnumbing. I think mainly because it's just the verse over and over, there's no refrain. maybe it's because we didn't have an ice cream truck in my total lack of a neighborhood growing up. anyway, we had a day of rest yesterday, but today the truck is in the alley right outside our bedroom window again, dancing its chorusless jig of frozen confections.
over the weekend drew met this guy mike in torrance and introduced us. shane and I went down there for lunch and a movie (but I'm a cheerleader; shane'd never seen it), and he ended up driving up here yesterday on his day off to hang out again. I like him, hopefully he'll let us hang around a lot.
it's been nice catching up with old friends. just a few days after we got here we kicked it with david... went to la verne and had pizza at warehouse, stopped by the state farm office and saw nicole (she moved my insurance while I was there... it's expensive in our current zipcode), picked up his friend sam, went to downtown disney, downtown long beach... just goofed off all afternoon. and we've ventured out to santa monica several times to be mocked by fierce. he took us to a great coffee shop the other day... they don't service drip at all, you either get espresso or "regular" coffee via vacuum pot or french press. very cool.
I need to take photos of our neighborhood and apartment. it's nice, although I don't think tam well-understands how a sublet works. you're supposed to provide at least a little space for your tenants. I finally just gave up and took all the stuff on one of the dressers and put it in a box, and wedged it in one of the closets. she'll just have to unpack a little when she gets home. I'll be a lot happier when we have our own place. the photo thing is kind of a pain in the ass, actually... there's a cablemodem but apparently it's locked to only use the mac of the usb↔ethernet adapter, so seamus has to lose his network to use the compactflash reader. lame.
I got icecast up and serving a test stream this morning, but there are some things about it I don't like so I think I'm gonna check out the actual server from shoutcast before I decide what to use. maybe it'll be up for general use by the end of the week, and automatically handling requests a week after that.
yesterday's skateboard-as-transportation event was a trip to our local office depot (which just happens to be store #666) to buy blank-on-both-sides index cards. it's time to start learning kanji again, and I'm just going to start at the beginning of the hadamitzky book and do a page a day, starting today. that gets me through the entire jouyou set in less than a year.
