a couple of quick and dirty real-world benchmarks, in case anyone's interested.

test casecrusoe 633coppermine 733
bzip2 -dc linux-2.4.9.tar.bz2 | tar xf -1:110:55
make dep clean bzImage11:307:44

the coppermine has about 16% more cycles to burn, and got the two test cases done 23% and 33% faster, respectively. factor in the box I'm testing gets 24 fully-configured servers in a 3U space at less than a thousand bucks per server, and uses about 1/5 the power of a stack of similarly equipped 1U boxes—and I'm pretty happy.
